WILLOW WOOD — With time running out, Braden Stamper hadn’t scored so he had to do something fast.
He did.
Stamper got the ball with nine seconds to play and raced the length of the floor to score with 2.1 seconds left to score his only basket of the game and give the Rock Hill Redmen a thrilling 50-49 win over the Symmes Valley Vikings on Tuesday.
Jaret Bacorn scored 13 points and Cody Roberts had 11 points as he filled in for injured starter Logan Hankins to help Rock Hill (2-19) get the win.
Garrett Miller had a big game off the bench for Rock Hill as he scored nine points including a pair of 3-point goals. Jake Blagg had seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Bacorn and Kadin France dominated the glass as France had 11 rebounds and Bacorn 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.
Playing yet another close game this season, Symmes Valley (11-9) was led by Layken Gothard with a game-high 22 points. Jack Leith added 10 points.
The Vikings hurt themselves at the foul line as they made only 11-of-24 free throw attempts.
The Vikings led 12-10 after the first quarter as Gothard hit two 3-pointers and Nick Klaiber added a trey. Bacorn scored four points for the Redmen.
Symmes Valley extended its lead to 26-18 at the half as Leith scored eight points in the second quarter including 2-of-2 at the line. Miller had a trifecta and scored six points.
Rock Hill began its comeback in the third quarter by outscoring the Vikings 18-13 and cut the deficit to just 39-36.
Five different players scored for the Redmen with Roberts hitting a 3-pointer as he got five points. Miller also had a triple with Bacorn and France scoring four each.
Gothard scored eight of the Vikings’ points.
In the fourth quarter, Roberts had four more points while Gothard hit a 3pointer and scored seven points.
The Vikings were 5-of-8 from the line in the quarter and Rock Hill just 2-of-7.
But Stamper was able to come up with the big play to help the Redmen overcome their foul shooting woes.
On Friday, Rock Hill hosts Fairland and Symmes Valley visits Green.
