Prepare for flood dangers

Several days of heavy rains have contributed to flooding throughout our region, with the Ohio River reaching its highest crest in several years.

While forecasters at the National Weather Service in Charleston, who monitor the river, say the water levels will drop below flood stage by this evening, a strong chance of more heavy rain is forecast for later this week, raising the possibility of additional flooding.

We encourage those who live along waterways to be vigilant and monitor both forecasts and water levels near their home in the coming days. If flooding does occur, please take steps to keep you and your family safe.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security offers the following tips:

• Move to higher ground as quickly as possible and evacuate. Be sure you have a plan in mind for the possibility of a flood, with a safe location in mind.

• Avoid driving or walking through flood waters. It only takes six inches water to create enough force to knock a person off their feet.

• Avoid driving over bridges that span over fast-moving floodwaters. The water can scour foundation material from around the structure’s footings, making it unstable.

• Disconnect electrical appliances and do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
