HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – After averaging 31 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists, Marshall men’s basketball guard C.J. Burks has been named Conference USA’s Player of the Week, the league announced.
“I’m happy for C.J,” head coach Dan D’Antoni said. “He put up good stats and helped get us two important wins on the road, which made for a good weekend.”
The weekly award is the second career win for Burks, who won the award on Jan. 22. With the award, Burks and junior guard Jon Elmore are the first duo to win multiple C-USA awards in the same season since Louisiana Tech’s Alex Hamilton and Erik McCree did so in the 2015-16 season. The two are also the lone players in Herd history to ever win the award multiple times in the same season in C-USA.
Burks averaged his 31 points from 24-of-32 (75.0 percent) field goals, 8-of-10 (80 percent) shots from three-point land and a perfect 6-of-6 (100 percent) at the charity stripe.
Against Rice, the junior scored a career-high 36 points from a near-perfect 6-of-7 (85.7 percent) 3-pointers, while also making 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) of his field goals and shooting a perfect 4-of-4 (100 percent) at the free throw line. Burks also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in Houston. He scored 20 of his 36 points in the second half from shooting 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) FGs, 4-of-5 (80 percent) three-pointers and making all four of his free throw attempts.
In Denton, Texas, Burks scored a game-high 26 points in just 29 minutes, including the game-winning basket with 0.3 seconds left. His 26 points came from 11-of-13 (84.6 percent) field goals, 2-of-3 (66.7 percent) three-pointers and 2-of-2 free throws. The junior scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half, where he made a near-flawless 9-of-10 (90 percent) field goals, 2-of-3 (66.7 percent) of his three-pointers and one free throw.
The Herd is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 22, for its final home series of the season when it welcomes the Old Dominion Monarchs at 7 p.m.
