Lady Panthers stop Lady Vikings in opener

AID — Seven is not a lucky number when it refers to errors.
The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings had seven errors as they lost 10-5 to the Chesapeake Lady Panthers on Monday in their season opener.
“We made too many errors. But these girls will work and they’ll get better,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.
Chesapeake jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead.
Ryleigh Swann and Katy Spears singled and Brooke Webb reached on an error. A throwing error scored a run, Lyric Bair singled, Erika Bowman was safe on an error and Chloe Handley grounded out as a run scored.
“We hit the ball pretty well and Webb was solid on the mound,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice. “It was a good effort but we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”
The Vikings made it 4-3 in the fourth. Taylor Webb was safe on an error and scored on Kara Saunders’ double. Morgan Jenkins singled, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Emily Estep’s RBI single.
Both teams scored two runs in the fifth.
Spears and Webb singled, Bair put down a sacrifice and Jordan Storms had a two-run double.
In the bottom of the inning, Kingery singled, Rachael Hayes walked, Webb had an RBI single and Hailee Littlejohn’s ground out scored a run.
The Lady Panthers scored three runs in the sixth to make it 9-5.
Ashley Tackett singled and Swann tripled for a run. Webb walked, Bair had an RBI single and a throwing error scored a run.
A run scored in the seventh when Handley and Tackett reached on errors, moved up on a ground out and scored when Spears grounded out.
Brooke Webb went the distance to get the win and was 2-3 at the plate. Swann and Bair were 2-4 and Spears 2-5.
Taylor Webb, Kingery and Ericca Ross all went 2-4 for the Lady Vikings.
Symmes Valley hosts Sciotoville East on Wednesday.
