SCIOTOVILLE — Maybe Isaac Whaley is starting to like this starting pitcher thing.
In a rare pitching start, Whaley threw a five-inning complete game as the St. Joseph Flyers rolled past the Sciotoville East Tartans 14-1 on Tuesday.
Whaley struck out 11, walked two and gave up just two hits in getting the win. He also went 3-for-4 with a triple at the plate.
“The kid has never been a starter before except I think maybe one game. He’s always worked in relief,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
“He keeps the ball down and hits his spots. If he does that, we’ll be in the game. And once again we had contributions all up and down the order. We just need to keep improving and be consistent.”
The Flyers (2-1) banged out 11 hits with Chase Walters going 3-3 with a double and five runs batted in. Jimmy Mahlmeister was 2-4 with a double while Jacob Salisbury, Chase Wilds and Clay Willis each had a hit.
East took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but the Flyers came back with a seven-run uprising in the second.
Walters singled, Wilds was hit by a pitch, Max Weber was safe when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed, Salisbury was hit by a pitch, J.C. Damron walked, Mahlmeister singled home two and Walters doubled in a pair.
The lead went to 9-1 in the fourth inning when Willis singled and scored on Whaley’s triple and Walters followed with an RBI single.
St. Joseph got five more in the fifth to create the run-rule victory.
Willis walked, Whaley singled and a wild pitch scored a run. After another wild pitch sent Whaley to third he scored on Walters’ sacrifice fly.
Wilds then singled and was balked to second. Ryan Scaife and Izsak Unger walked, and two straight balks led to two runs. Mahlmeister reached on a fielder’s choice as the final run scored.
The Flyers visit South Gallia on Wednesday.
