PT. PLEASANT, W.Va. — In this case, the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings were OK with going 1-for-2.
After losing the first game 9-1, the Lady Vikings bounced back with a 7-3 win in the nightcap against the Pt. Pleasant Lady Knights.
“I was glad we ended the day on a winning note. The kids handled themselves well under pressure,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep. “We needed to get outside and play.”
Taylor Webb belted a solo home run to right field in the first for a 1-0 lead.
Pt. Pleasant tied the game in the third and scored twice in the fourth to lead 3-1.
But the Lady Vikings put together a six-run rally in the sixth.
Rachael Hayes, Webb, Kara Saunders, Emily Estep and Morgan Jenkins all singled to put the Lady Vikings up 3-1.
Ericca Ross walked to force in a run before the next two batters were retired. But Sarah Kingery clutched up with a three-run triple and the Lady Vikings had a 7-3 lead.
Kingery blanked Pt. Pleasant the final two innings to get the win. She struck out five and walked won in going the distance.
Webb, Saunders, Estep and Jenkins all went 2-4 while Ross, Hayes and Kingery were 1-2.
Pt. Pleasant won the first game 9-1 in five innings by collecting 15 hits.
The Lady Vikings got their only run of the game in the fifth when Webb doubled and Saunders singled with two outs.
Webb was 2-3 with a double, Saunders 2-3, Kingery 1-2 and Jenkins and Estep each 1-1 as the Lady Vikings had seven hits.
Symmes Valley hosts Portsmouth Notre Dame on Monday and visits Sciotoville East on Tuesday.
