COAL GROVE — Cody Lewis was in shutdown mode.
Lewis pitched a three-hitter and struck out 12 as the Rock Hill Redmen beat the Coal Grove Hornets 11-1 in six innings on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Rock Hill (3-0, 1-0) had 13 hits as Brayden Friend went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in, Seth Nichols 3-3 with an RBI and both Jaret Bacorn and Jake Blagg were 2-4 with an RBI.
“We had timely hits. We scored runs with two outs. Cody threw the ball well. He struck out 12 and we made the plays we had to make. Cody pretty much shut them down,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral.
Rock Hill took a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Blagg walked, Nichols singled and a passed ball scored the run. Lewis walked and Kaleb Kidd had an RBI single. Logan Hankins reached on a fielder’s choice, Kaden France walked and Bacorn had an RBI single.
The Redmen added a run in the second when Blagg reached on an error, stole second, took third on Nichols’ sacrifice and Lewis had an RBI single.
“We got out on them early and kept it going. We played well,” said Litteral.
Jeb Jones belted a solo home run to dead centerfielder to lead off the fourth for the Hornets’ run.
The lead went to 7-1 in the fifth.
Friend had a two-out double and Blagg singled for a run. Blagg went to second on the throw home and Nichols got an RBI single.
Rock Hill scored their final four runs in the sixth to create the run-rule victory.
Kidd doubled and courtesy runner Jordan Griffith moved up on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly by France.
Bacorn then singled, Kyle Stanfield walked and Friend hit a three-run homer.
Rock Hill hosts Fairland on Wednesday. Coal Grove visits Rock Hill on Thursday.
