The Rock Hill Redmen did OK, but they were thankful for the help they got.
The Redmen took advantage of walks and errors along with the pitching of Cody Lewis to beat the Ironton Fighting Tigers 10-2 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.
Lewis gave up two hits, struck out seven and walked two in going the distance.
“Cody threw the ball well and we took advantage of eight walks, a hit batter and errors,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral. “We just kept battling and put the ball in play.”
Rock Hill (9-1, 7-1) broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth.
Kaleb Kidd singled, Logan Hankins and Kaden France walked, and Landon Smith hit a two-run double.
The lead went to 3-0 in the fifth when Jake Blagg walked, Seth Nichols was hit by a pitch, Kidd walked and Blagg scored on a delayed steal.
Ironton got the run back in the bottom of the inning.
Collin Freeman walked, moved up on a wild pitch and scored when Ethan Duncan reached on an error.
But the Redmen scored three in the sixth.
Jaret Bacorn singled, Smith had an infield hit, Braden Friend and Cody Lewis both reached on errors to score two more runs.
Rock Hill got four runs in the seventh.
Bacorn singled, stole second, took third on a passed ball, Smith walked and Blagg reached on an error for a run.
Nichols walked, Lewis reached on a fielder’s choice and Kidd single as two runs scored. Lewis scored on a wild pitch.
Ironton (2-7) got a run in the bottom of the inning when Freeman reached on an error, moved up on a ground out and a throwing error scored the run.
The two teams meet at Rock Hill on Friday. The Redmen also host Chesapeake on Thursday.
