Marvin Hughes

April 6, 1939 — April 8, 2018

Marvin L. Hughes, 79, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Catlettsburg, Kentucky native was born April 6, 1939, the son of the late Luther and Evelyn Conley Hughes.
He is survived by his wife, Kay Deer Newhouser Hughes, whom he married on May 30, 1991.
Marvin was a graduate of Catlettsburg High School and a former sergeant for Jackson Tire in Ashland, where he worked for 20-plus years. He was a United States Air States Air Force veteran and also attended Church of the King in Ironton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Christine Christian; a brother, Tommy Hughes; a daughter, Victoria Hughes; and a brother-in-law, Jimmy Dutton.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Christopher (Sheri) Hughes, Jennifer Hughes, Eric (Kathrine) Newhouser, Brian Newhouser, Geneva Whitt and Hal (Mary Ann) Newhouser; grandchildren, Tori Hughes, Holly Hughes, Nicholos Gonzolez, Joshua Gonzolez, Eric Whitt, Cody Newhouser, Jason Newhouser, Julie Newhouser, Jeremy Newhouser, Samantha Newhouser, Kylie Newhouser and Dylan Newhouser; four sisters, Frances “Sugar” (Gerald) Thompson, Becky Dutton, Marty Kershner and Cyndi (Doug) Sammons; a sister-in-law, Sharon Hughes; a brother-in-law, Gary Deer; and nine great-grandchildren.

Robert Sloan

Oct. 15, 1933 — April 16, 2018

Robert “Bob” Denver Sloan, 84, of Fredrick, Maryland, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018, in Fredrick Memorial Hospital, Fredrick, Maryland.
Mr. Sloan was born Oct. 15, 1933, in Lawrence County, a son of the late Patrick Sloan and Hilda Marie (Beals) Cope. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Ruth (Freeman) Sloan.
Mr. Sloan was a graduate of Coal Grove High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. His enlistment included being a part of the Korean War, serving on the USS Manatee. He was a retired technical engineer for Allied Signal Chemical and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by two sons, Tom (Christy) Sloan, of Central, Louisiana, and J.P. (Courtney) Sloan, of New Market, Maryland; sister, Janet Sue Cope Yates, of Coal Grove; three grandchildren, Dustin Dupree and Sarah Sloan, both of Central, Louisiana, and Connor Sloan, of New Market, Maryland; four nieces and nephews, Bambi (Bernie) Hensley and Missy (Kevin) Jenkins, both of Ironton, Chuck (Sharon) Yates, of Beckley, West Virginia, and Mac Yates, of Coal Grove; and lifelong friend, “Meat” Compliment.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton, with the Rev. Jim Beals officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton, with military graveside rites provided by VFW Post 8851.
