SOUTH POINT — This game was about doing the little things.
The South Point Pointers used traditional baseball execution to help beat the East Carter Raiders 5-2 on Thursday.
Brody Blackwell worked four innings for the win. He gave up four hits, struck out two, walked four and allowed four hits.
Douglas Shaffer pitched two scoreless innings and Travis Dillon a scoreless seventh.
“We were able to execute just enough at the right times to get the win. It was a total team effort,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
“Blackwell pitched well to put us in a position to get the win. Shaffer came through with two big hits and pitched us out of a jam in the top of the fifth.”
Each team scored a run in the first inning.
Donovan Damron singled, stole second and Matthew Holmes singled for the Raiders’ run.
Blackwell singled, stole second, went to third on a hit by Jonathon Henline and scored on an error.
The Pointers (10-1) took a 3-1 lead in the second.
Ben Walls was safe on an error and stole second. Drew Smith put down a sacrifice and Dawson Runyon had an RBI single.
Blackwell was safe on an error and then stole second. A throwing error on the play allowed the run to score.
East Carter got within 3-2 in the fifth when Noah Caudill, Trey Scott walked, Lucas Young singled to load the bases and Holmes hit into a fielder’s choice as the run scored.
The Pointers added two insurance runs in the sixth.
Walls and Smith singled and Brycen McCann walked to load the bases. Blackwell walked to force in a run and Shaffer singled home the second run.
Shaffer was 2-4 with two runs batted in to pace a balanced offense.
Young was 2-4 for the Raiders.
