Lady Panthers can’t hold lead in loss to Lawrence County
CHESAPEAKE — Someone must have put butter on the lead because the Chesapeake Lady Panthers couldn’t hold onto it.
Lawrence County Lady Bulldogs rallied from four runs down to beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 10-7 in eight innings.
Pitcher Brooke Webb did not walk a batter but the Lady Panthers made seven errors. Webb struck out eight.
“Their pitched did a nice job. She’s one of the better ones we’ve seen all year,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice.
Lawrence County got a run in the top of the fourth but Chesapeake came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Katy Spears walked, Webb singled and an outfield error allowed both runners to score.
The Lady Panthers got a run in the fifth when Rachel Pratt singled, Ashley Tackett walked and Spears and Ryleigh Swann reached on errors for a run.
Chesapeake took a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Jordan Storms singled Chloe Handley doubled to score pinch-runner Alexis Kearns.
Pratt reached on an error and Tackett was safe on an error to load the bases. Spears followed with a triple to empty the bases.
Lawrence County got four runs in the seventh to tie the game and then scored three times in the eighth to get the win.
Ashley Hayes double and Kassidi Cavins singles to snap the tie. An overthrow sent Cavins to second. Amber Triplett singled in the run but was thrown out in a rundown.
After Abby Fletcher reached on an error, the Lady Bulldogs got singled from Mckenzie Methex and Ciana Bowen to cap the scoring.
Chesapeake hosts Fairland at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.
