Non-perishable food items may be left for pickup

Organizations working to combat the problem of hunger in the region are calling for people to help out on Saturday.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, conducted by the National Association of Letter Carriers, is set for this weekend.

Diane Porter, director of Harvest for the Hungry food pantry, said volunteers will be going door to door with letter carriers to pick up items.

People can leave non-perishable food items out for pick up, she said.

“Canned goods, pasta, cereals,” she said. “Those are the kinds of things we need.”

Items collected will be distributed between Harvest and the Ironton City Welfare Mission, she said.

Porter said there is no set beginning and end time for Saturday’s event.

“It will go by when your mail runs,” she said.

Stamp Out Hunger, a nationwide effort, celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, and has collected hundreds of millions of pounds of food through the years.
