IHS senior to receive PWCC scholarship

Organization hosted annual tea on April 6

The Progressive Women’s Civic Club hosted its annual Frances Washington Memorial Scholarship Tea on April 6.

The event is aimed at recognizing African American seniors at Ironton High School and Collins Career Technical Center who applied for the Frances Washington Memorial Scholarship.

The guest speaker for the tea was Leah Brown, RN, the BSN director of Hospice of Huntington.

A 1996 graduate of Ironton High School, Brown told the audience about her life and the different types of struggles she faced as she pursued her dreams. She said she always liked to use acronyms to help her study.

As she closed, she told the audience, if they remember anything else remember this acronym: LEARN! (L- Let, E – Everything, A – Around you, R. – Raise you to a, N. – New Level!).

The Frances Washington Memorial Scholarship will be awarded on the field at the May 27 Ironton High School graduation by Progressive Women’s Civic Club President Andrea Preston.
