A jury issued awards for both the plaintiff and defendant in a case involving the former treasurer of the Lawrence County Educational Service Center.

Teresa Lawless had sued the ESC and a trial took place in the courtroom of Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge Andrew Ballard, starting May 29.

On Tuesday, the jury reached their verdict.

“Both won portions of their case,” Ballard told The Tribune on Thursday.

The jury awarded $122,054.10 and $237,890 to Lawless.

Ballard said these were for the monetary value of accrued sick and vacation days, and the amount of days left on her five-year contact.

The jury awarded $1,370 to the ESC as a result of its counter claim. Ballard said both parties’ attorneys agreed to the verdict.

He said this concludes the case, other than “a small portion” regarding reimbursement for attorney’s fees.

Lawless was suspended from her job at the ESC in 2016. Ohio Auditor David Yost issued a report in 2017, with findings alleging abuse and misspending at the ESC.

Yost issued another report in April, with finding alleging the ESC and Lawless erroneously spent funds of the closed Lawrence Academy.

Lawless cited Auditor of State awards the ESC had received while she was treasurer.

She said the ESC, and not her, had received the monies from the Lawrence Academy and this had resulted from a coding error.
