Citizens of Lawrence County and the surrounding area have been showing their support for two worthy causes.

On Saturday, Harvest for the Hungry food pantry hosted its annual silent auction and fundraiser, drawing about 90 people to First Church of the Nazarene in Ironton.

More than $3,100 was raised from the event, which included sales of the donated auction items.

The funds will be put to good use, as Harvest works diligently to provide meals to low-income residents of the area.

During 2017 alone, the pantry served more 17,000 people, which included 5,738 families, 2,785 senior citizens, 5,147 children and 9,071 other adults.

Also of note are the members of El Hasa Shriner Temple Hillbilly Clan 1 Outhouse 8, who spent the last few weeks at community events, selling raffle tickets for OSU football season passes.

Like all of the group’s activities throughout the year, all proceeds raised went to the Shriners Children’s Hospitals in Cincinnati and Lexington, Kentucky, as well as the transportation fund to take children and their families to the hospitals.

More than $4,300 was raised locally from the sale, which also included groups across the state that brought in $87,000 to charities.

Both of these organizations are outstanding examples of charity, consisting of volunteers who give their time and energy to help those in need .

We are glad to hear that people of our region did not hesitate to give to these groups and showed a sense of community in supporting their noble work.
