ALBANY — It took a team effort.
The Chesapeake Panthers got big plays on offense and defense from a plethora a players as they beat the Alexander Spartans 21-13 on Friday.
Alexander (1-1) took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard run by Kaleb Easley and Marcus Spaulding kicked the point after.
The Spartans took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards in 11 plays.
Chesapeake came back to take the lead thanks to Kamren Harless who came up with an interception at the 32-yard line to jump start the Panthers.
Three plays later Austin Browning hit Tylan Hutchison on a 44-yard pass play. Hutchison picked up a botched snap on the conversion and ran for the points as the Panthers went ahead 8-7.
The Spartans marched to the Panthers’ 18 only to fumble and Patrick Rawlins recovered at the 11.
Moments later, Logan Walsh dashed 87 yards for a touchdown and Brady Wilson’s kick put the lead at 15-7 with 41 seconds on the second quarter clock.
Wilson kicked a 20-yard field goal with 3:54 left in the third quarter, but the Spartans answered quickly as Michael Kelly bolted 61 yards 18 seconds later and it was 18-13.
Chesapeake added a 27-yard Wilson field goal with 4:54 to play and it was 21-13.
Alexander then drove to the Chesapeake 30-yard line only to have linebacker Dillon Lunsford knock away a fourth down pass to preserve the win.
Browning was 2-of-4 passing for 101 yards and a touchdown, but he was knocked out of the game early and did not return.
Hutchison caught two passes for 66 yards and Harless had one catch for 57.
The Panthers finished with 165 yards rushing as Walsh led with 94 yards on three carries. They had 288 total yards while Alexander racked up 345 including 257 on the ground.
Easley ran 28 times for 112 yards and was 6-of-11 passing for 88 yards and two interceptions. Connor Kimbrough carried 15 times for 75 yards and Kelly twice for 70 yards.
