Pointers end soccer season with two wins

SOUTH POINT — It’s always good when you finish strong.
The South Point Pointers closed out the regular soccer season this week with a pair of victories.
The Pointers got a big 2-1 come-from-behind win over Portsmouth Clay on Tuesday. They followed that up with a 6-0 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Portsmouth Trojans on Thursday.
“Portsmouth was very impressive for a first-year team,” said Pointers’ coach Zane Joy. “We controlled the game but they made us work for it.”
The win gives South Point an 8- 5-3 regular season record. The Pointers visit Minford at 5 p.m. on Monday in the Division III sectional tournament.
South Point scored three goals in each half en route to the shutout win.

At the 12-minute mark, Smith went to work and scored a goal with an assist from Marquise Yancey.
The progression continued as Yancey scored an unassisted goal with 20 minutes on the clock and it was 3-0.
In the second half, Kyle Badgett had an unassisted goal at the 53-minute mark.
Luke Tyree then had a hand in the next two goals. John Overstreet scored with an assist by Tyree at the 63-minute mark.
Tyree got the next goal unassisted at the 70-minute mark.
On Tuesday, Clay took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Bryce Toomire in the first half.
South Point finally tied the game at the 45:00 of the second half when Tyree scored with an assist from Yancey.
The Pointers got the winning goal two minutes later when Tyree scored with an assist from Tyler Lilly.
Jaylon Halfhill had six saves for the Pointers while Dakota Dodds recorded 12 saves for Clay.
