SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Ian Book’s stay on No. 3 Notre Dame’s sideline will be a short one.
Coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that the 6-foot, 208-pound junior quarterback, who led the Irish (10-0, No. 3 CFP) to six straight victories before suffering a rib injury in Notre Dame’s 31-21 victory at Northwestern two weeks ago, will practice Tuesday and, if there are no setbacks, reclaim his starting spot over Brandon Wimbush.
“We expect, based on the information we received today, that he would be ready to practice on Tuesday,” Kelly said of Book, who did not dress but watched Wimbush, the player he replaced earlier this season, throw for three first-half touchdowns in Notre Dame’s 42-13 victory over Florida State Saturday night.
Notre Dame plays No. 12 Syracuse at Yankee Stadium next Saturday.
“Ian would be our starting quarterback,” Kelly said Sunday. Kelly had joked after Saturday’s victory about creating a quarterback controversy for the media.
Book led the nation in completion percentage (74.5) and was sixth in passing efficiency (169.96) prior to Saturday’s game. For the season, he has completed 152 of 204 passes for 1,824 yards and 15 touchdowns with four interceptions while running for 218 yards and four scores.
