Merle Adams

Oct. 15, 1933 — Nov. 16, 2018

Merle D. Adams, 85, of South Point, passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia. The New Castle, Kentucky native was born Oct. 15, 1933, the son of the late Warren T. and Clady Bryant Adams. He was one of 17 children. He is survived by his wife, Millie Jane Nance Adams, whom he married in 1988.
Mr. Adams attended Worthville, Kentucky schools and was a former river boat captain for Ashland Oil, where he retired in 1998 after 43 years of service. He is a United States Army veteran who served during the Korean War and is a member of the American Legion in Ironton, as well as the Disabled American Veterans Organization. He is of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Willena J. Adams; a son, Kenny Fout; daughter-in-law, Birdie Fout; and son-in-law, David Schochler.
In addition to his wife, Merle is survived by two daughters, Tracey (Brov) Draque and Stacey Adams (Bryan) Ellegood, both of Bedford, Kentucky; stepdaughter, Connie Sue (Jack) Hatfield, of Proctorville; stepson, Jim (Tanna) Fout, of Willow Wood; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with pastor Roger Smathers and pastor Jeremy Simpson officiating. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
