RIO GRANDE — Emma Saxby understands why student goes first when listed as a student-athlete.

The former St. Joseph Lady Flyers soccer standout is currently a member of the University of Rio Grande RedStorm women’s soccer team and she earned two academic awards this past weekend.

Saxby was named a River States Conference Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete as 76 players from the 14-team league earned the academic award.

Students must have an average of 3.25 or higher and nominated by their school.

The NAIA has a similar awards program entitled the NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete Award which is for juniors and seniors who have a 3.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Saxby was also named to the NAIA Daktronics award list. She was one of five Rio Grande women’s soccer players honored.

The junior defender is a Business Management major with a minor in Marketing.
