CHESAPEAKE — Hello, police? I’d like to report a missing offense.
That’s what Chesapeake Lady Panthers’ coach Chris Ball was thinking after his team scored only five points in the second half as the South Point Lady Pointers turned a close game into a 49-24 rout on Monday.
“We had the lead for most of the first half and they hit a shot before the half to take the lead. We were right there and the I don’t know what happened,” said Ball.
“It was a little bit of their defense in the halfcourt and a whole lot of us. I can’t explain it. I’ve never seen anything like that before.”
Emilee Whitt scored 14 points and Emilee Carey had 12 points to lead a balanced South Point offense to the Ohio Valley Conference win.
Kate Mundy added nine points and Maddy Khounlavong got six for South Point (2-0, 1-0).
Chesapeake (1-1, 0-1) was led by Shia Ervin with eight points while Taylor Hicks and Maddi Ward had six each.
Chesapeake took an 11-10 first quarter lead as Hicks and Ward combined for nine points.
Whit hit a 3-points and scored seven points.
Ervin had four points in the second quarter and Chesapeake lead 19-17 when the Lady Pointers rallied to take a 22-19 lead at the half.
Khounlavong hit a 3-pointers and two fouled shots and Carey also had a triple to key the comeback.
South Point extended the lead to 34-21 at the end of the third quarter as Carey hit another trifecta and scored five points while Whitt also had a 3-pointer. Ervin had the only basket for Chesapeake in the quarter.
The Lady Pointers continued to pad their lead in the fourth quarter by outscoring Chesapeake 15-3 as six different players scored.
On Thursday, South Point hosts Portsmouth and Chesapeake goes to Rock Hill.
