WILLOW WOOD — If this was horseshoes instead of basketball, the Symmes Valley Vikings would be doing really well.
The young and inexperienced Vikings did it again on Saturday as they played a good team close but couldn’t get the win in a 64-58 loss to the South Webster Jeeps.
The Jeeps hurt the Vikings with 11 3-point goals as Trae Zimmerman hit four long shots and scored 17 points while Tanner Voiers made three treys and scored 19 points.
“Give South Webster some credit. They are a very good basketball team and shot the basketball very well,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Coffman.
“I thought we competed and fought back. I like the improvements we are making defensively. We just need to keep working. The guys are starting to understand their roles. Weill take a little break with our families and get back to work.”
The Vikings (2-7) had four players in double figures led by Jack Leith with 15 points. Luke Leith and 11 points while Drew Scherer and Alec Carpenter scored 10 points each.
Voiers hit two 3-poitners and scored eight points while Brayden Bockway had a 3-pointer and scored five points to help put the Jeeps ahead 21-14 in the first quarter.
Jack Leith scored five points and Trenton Turner scored all four of his points.
Zimmerman made three 3-pointers and had 11 points while Braden Martin added a trifecta and the Jeeps opened up a 39-24 halftime lead.
Jack Leith had four of the Vikings’ 10 points.
Symmes Valley began its comeback in the third quarter as seven different players scored and cut the deficit to 49-41.
Scherer drained a pair of triples, Carpenter had a trey and two fouls shots and Luke Leith scored four points as the Vikings continued to rally.
But Andrew Smith hit a 3-pointer and scored all six of his points while Voiers scored six points to keep the Jeeps ahead.
South Webster was 8-of-15 from the foul line in the quarter.
The Vikings host South Gallia on Friday.
