SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers love to make things interesting.
The Pointers blew an 18-point lead and then went to overtime to beat the South Webster Jeeps 57-53 on Saturday.
“We came out and guarded and got on fire in the first half. Then we came out and relaxed and didn’t guard and we were in a dogfight. We have to stay focused and maintain our intensity,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“But we’re learning. It’s going to take a little time and it’s time we don’t have.”
Austin Webb scored 15 points, Chance Gunther 11 and Nakyan Turner added 10 points for South Point (3-3).
Brayden Bockway scored 20 points for the Jeeps while Jacob Ruth had 12 and Andrew Smith 10.
Webb had seven points and Gunther four as the Pointers took a 15-7 first quarter lead.
Gunther hit a 3-pointer and scored five points while Turner and Webb had four each and the Pointers took a 32-14 halftime lead.
Bockway had four points and Smith hit a 3-pointer to account for the Jeeps’ offense in the quarter.
South Point had just four points in the third quarter while five different players scored and rallied the Jeeps who cut the deficit to 36-29.
Bockway had six points, Trae Zimmerman four points and Smith hit a 3-pointer and a foul shot as the Jeeps rallied to tie the game at 47 and forced the overtime.
In overtime, Brody Blackwell and Kyle Badgett each hit 3-pointers as South Point outscored the Jeeps 10-6.
“Brody and Kyle both stepped up and hit big 3s,” said Wise. “In overtime, we got a couple of big stops and hit a couple of big shots.”
South Point hosts Fairland on Friday.
