SOUTH POINT — Going inside and outside has the South Point Lady Pointers going up.
With the outside shooting of Emilee Carey and Emilee Whitt combined with the inside play of Ashley Perkey, the South Point Lady Pointers remained unbeaten in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 41-29 win over the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers on Thursday.
Perkey scored 12 points while Carey had 11 and South Point improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the league.
“Perkey is getting better and we have the guards who can get the ball to her where she can do something with the ball,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.
“We weren’t very patient on offense in the first half. Part of that was because of Ironton’s defense. But we got some transition baskets in the second half that got us going.”
Ironton (4-6, 4-2) was led by Riley Schreck who hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Lydia Hannan and Elli Williams scored seven each.
South Point lead 14-8 after the first quarter as Carey had nine points including a 3-pointer and Whitt added a triple. Schreck had a pair of trifectas for Ironton.
Williams had five points as she and Schreck each made a trey and Ironton cut the deficit to 20-18 at the half.
But the Lady Pointers held Ironton to five points in the third quarter while Perkey scored six points and the lead grew to 32-23.
“When they extended the lead out to nine points, that was the turning point,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.
“I feel like the last five games we’ve held teams in the low 40s and you have to feel good holding teams like that. We just have to get in an offensive flow.”
Schreck had another trey in the fourth quarter but the Lady Pointers converted 7-of-11 free throws including 3-of-4 by Whitt.
On Monday, Ironton host Coal Grove and South Point visits Rock Hill.
