Blue Devils escape Hornets’ upset bid

COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Hornets had upset on their mind. The Gallipolis Blue Devils did like what they were thinking.
The Hornets took a halftime lead, but a strong third quarter helped the Blue Devils get the lead and they held on for a 65-58 Ohio Valley Conference win on Friday.
Coal Grove (6-3, 1-2) led 30-28 against the favored Blue Devils, but 7-foot-1 Zach Loveday took over and 19 of his 29 points in the second half to trigger the comeback.
Justin McClelland hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points while Logan Blouir had 13 points for Gallipolis (5-3, 2-1).
The Hornets got 17 points each from Aaron Music and Cory Borders who had four 3-pointers. Evan Gannon and Payten Smith added nine points each.
Coal Grove led 12-2 to start the game and it was 14-8 as the end of the quarter as Borders hit a pair a triples and Music got four points.
McClelland had two trifectas, Loveday six points and Blouir five more as the Blue Devils got within 30-28 at the half.
Borders had two more treys and eight points in the quarter for the Hornets while Ethan Short had all four of his points.
Loveday scored 10 points while McClelland hit two more 3-pointers and scored eight points to rally the Blue Devils who took a 50-44 lead.
Loveday scored nine more points and Blouir four while McClelland sank two clutch foul shots in the fourth quarter.
Music had six points but the Hornets were just 6-of-13 from the foul line in the quarter. Borders went 3-for-3 at the line.
On Tuesday, Coal Grove host Rock Hill and Gallipolis host South Point.
