Archer, Panthers top HSJ

CHESAPEAKE — The old Batman TV series had a villain known as the Archer who terrorized the good people and was a dead-eye shot with a bow and arrow.
The Chesapeake Panthers have an Archer who has terrorized opponents and can be a dead-eye shot at the basket.
The 6-foot-4 sophomore Eli Archer did both on Saturday as he scored 23 points to lead the Panthers to a 58-39 win over the Huntington St. Joseph Fighting Irish in the annual Beast of the Southeast Classic.
Archer, Trent Dearth and Logan Walsh scored four points each as Chesapeake went up 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.
Noah Bolton and Cory Sweeney combined for eight points with Bronson Barker hitting a 3-pointer in the quarter for the Irish.
Chesapeake (8-4) held the Irish to five points in the second quarter and pulled away to a 25-16 halftime lead as Archer score four more points, Levi Blankenship had four points and Tylan Hutchison got all three of his points.
The scoring picked up in the third quarter as Chesapeake outscored St. Joseph 18-13 to extend the lead to 43-29.
Archer scored 11 points and Blankenship hit a 3-pointer and scored five points for the Panthers while Sweeney had a pair of 3-pointers and seven points and Gunnell Hickman added a trey for the Irish.
Chesapeake was 5-of-6 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and five different players scored led by Blankenship and Archer with four each.
Sam Adkins hit a 3-poiner and scored five points and Sweeney added another triple to pace the Irish.
Blankenship finished with 13 points and Dearth added 10 as three players reached double figures for the Panthers.
Sweeney scored 14 points and Bolton added nine to pace Huntington St. Joseph (1-9).
