SEAMAN — The number “2” wasn’t very lucky for the South Point Pointers.
The pointers offense went stagnant in quarter No. 2 and two key turnovers in the fourth quarter were part of the reason the Pointers lost 61-53 to the Ripley Blue Jays on Saturday in the Dave Young Classic.
“I’m still waiting for us to play a full 32-minute game,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise. “The second quarter hurt and the two turnovers came at a bad time. But we’ll go back to work and get better.”
Chance Gunther had 16 points and Austin Webb 13 to lead the Pointers (6-8).
Peyton Fyffe scored 17 and Jaki Royal 13 for Ripley (12-2).
The Pointers took a 17-16 first quarter lead as Nakyan Turner hit a pair of 3-pointers, Gunther had a trifecta and Webb scored six points.
Royal and Fyffe each scored seven points that included a 3-pointer.
South Point managed just eight points in the second quarter and Ripley took advantage as Landon Rigdon hit two treys for a 30-25 halftime lead.
The Blue Jays extended the lead to 49-38 after three quarters. Fyffe and Royal each second seven points again including a 3-pointer. Roger Staggs scored four points for South Point.
Rigdon had a 3-pointer and scored five points in the fourth quarter, but the Pointers rallied to within four as Gunther scored seven points, Webb had five points and Brody Blackwell hit a 3-pointers.
The Pointers got a stop but turned the ball over that led to a Ripley basket and then turned the ball over on the inbounds play.
Ripley added two layups in the closing seconds to extend the lead.
South Points hosts Chesapeake on Tuesday.
