Dragons rally in 4th quarter to avoid Pointers’ upset bid

PROCTORVILLE — The only team to beat Fairland in the Ohio Valley Conference this season was at it again.
The South Point Pointers — who beat Fairland early in the year — flirted with the upset again on Tuesday before the Dragons rallied in the fourth quarter to get a 52-42 win.
Fairland is now 14-4 overall and atop the OVC at 9-1. South Point slips to 7-10 and 4-6.
South Point led by four points after three quarters only to watch Fairland outscore the Pointers 20-6 in the fourth quarter.
Ian Chinn scored six points, Jacob Polcyn had six points including 4-of-4 at the foul line, and Aiden Porter hit a 3-pointer and scored five points to trigger the fourth quarter comeback.
Austin Webb had all six of the points for South Point.
Porter and Clayton Thomas hit 3-pointers as Fairland took a 10-6 first quarter lead.
South Point rallied in the second quarter as Brody Blackwell hit three 3pointers and scored 11 points while Austin Webb had four points and South Point was up 21-20 at the half.
Porter had two more treys and scored eight points in the second.
The Pointers got a little breathing room in the third quarter as Webb scored nine points and Chance Gunther added a couple of baskets and it was 36-32.
Polcyn had seven points and Ian Chinn five for Fairland.
That set up the fourth quarter rally by the Dragons.
Porter led the Dragons with 18 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Polcyn had 15 points and 10 rebounds plus three assists while Chinn added 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Webb had a game-high 21 points and six rebounds to lead the Pointers. Blackwell finished with11 pointsand Roger Staggs had five rebounds.
On Friday, South Point hosts Gallipolis and Fairland visits Portsmouth.
