An offensive foul on one team provided the ignition to the other team’s offense.
The St. Joseph Flyers led the Green Bobcats 57-56 when Isaac Whaley was called for a charge and his fifth foul with 7:01 to play.
The play energized the Bobcats who went on an 18-0 run to end the game and get a 74-57 win on Tuesday.
“Green’s seniors played well. They are a veteran team with a lot of experience. Isaac is our only senior and we miss him a lot. We learned from this game,” said Flyers’ coach Chris Barnes.
“We missed a lot of easy shots in the first half. We could have been up by 15 or 20 points at the half. I’m pleased with how hard we played.”
Green (10-6) outscored the Flyers 23-6 in the fourth quarter as Tanner Kimbler scored 12 points including a 3-pointer and 5-of-6 at the foul line.
Kimbler finished the game with a game-high 33 points. Gage Sampson scored 19 and Tayte Carver scored 13.
St. Joseph (12-4) was led by Zach Roach with 25 points including five 3-pointers. J.C. Damron scored 11 points while Whaley had eight points before fouling out.
The Flyers took a 22-13 first quarter lead as Roach drained four trifectas and scored 13 points. Whaley and Jimmy Mahlmeister also had 3-pointers.
Kimber hit a 3-pointer and scored five points with Sampson getting four more for Green.
The Flyers lead was 41-31 at the break as Roach hit another trey and went 3-for-3 at the line. Jackson Rowe also hit a triple and Damron was 2-for-2 at the line as he got four points.
Carver scored six points and Kimbler five more — he was 3-of-5 at the line — to keep the Bobcats within striking range.
Kimbler came out firing in the third quarter as he hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 11 points while Sampson had seven more and Green battled back to tie the game at 51 and set the stage for the fourth quarter comeback.
