MAYSVILLE, Ky. — It may have been a loss, but it was a good measuring stick.
After losing 53-24 back in December, the St. Joseph Lady Flyers flirted with an upset on Thursday before falling 48-46 to the St. Patrick Lady Saints.
“The girls played so hard tonight. The defense was so good in the first half. They had four shooters and a good post player. They’re a good team,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
St. Joseph (10-11) led at half time and built an eight-point lead early in the second half before turnovers set in and turned the momentum of the game.
“We had a stretch there with some turnovers that hurt. But we fought through it and we kept playing hard,” said Burcham.
Makenna Roush and Isabella Riggs each hit 3-pointers while Justina Klee and Addison Hughes had four points each to give the Lady Saints a 15-11 first quarter lead.
Bella Whaley hit a 3-pointer and scored five points while Mahlmeister was 4-for-4 at the line.
St. Joseph held St. Patrick to only two points in the second quarter and took a 23-17 lead at the break.
Kaitlyn Sheridan hit a trifecta while Mahlmeister had four points and Unger hit two baskets just before halftime.
The Lady Flyers managed only seven points in the third quarter and St. Patrick took advantage of the turnovers to go up 38-30. Libby Gallenstein and Caroline McKay had two 3-pointers each and Roush hit another trey.
Sheridan scored seven points and Mahlmeister four points as St. Joseph got within five points. Emma Whaley’s 3-pointer before the buzzer set the final score.
Sheridan and Mahlmeister scored 11 points each and Bella Whaley had nine points and 17 rebounds. Mahlmeister grabbed seven rebounds and Emilee Blankenship had five.
Klee scored 11 points and Gallenstein 10 for the Lady Saints (10-12).
“Bella was unreal on the boards. I know of many people who have gotten 17 rebounds in a game, especially a freshman. Chloe (Sheridan) and Laiken (Unger) came in and played great off the bench again. These girls keep getting better and are so much fun to watch because they play so hard.”
St. Joseph hosts Ohio Valley Christian at 6 p.m. on Friday for senior night.
