SOUTH POINT — Three out of four wasn’t good enough.
The South Point Lady Pointers led for three of the four quarters, but the one quarter they failed to have the lead was the fourth as they lost a 42-37 heartbreaker to the Russell Lady Red Devils on Saturday.
Emilee Carey hit a 3-pointer and scored five points and Kate Mundy scored all four of her points in the first quarter as South Point took a 15-6 lead.
Lakie Sanders had four of Russell’s total.
Neither team generated much offense in the second quarter as the Lady Pointers’ lead was trimmed to 21-14 at the half.
The pace picked up in the third quarter as Russell cut the deficit to 33-31. Malia Blevins hit a 3-poiner and scored nine points while Sanders added five.
Emilee Whitt and Carey each made 3-pointers for South Point and Ashley Perkey was 4-of-4 at the foul line.
Whitt fouled out after scoring the team’s only basket in the fourth quarter and Maddy Khounlavong sank two foul shots for the Lady Pointers only four points.
Blevins hit another trey and made two free throws while Shaelyn Steele was 4-of-5 at the foul line to key Russell’s comeback.
Carey finished with 13 points for South Point (15-6). Perkey had seven rebounds and two steals while Whitt had five rebounds.
Blevins had a game-high 16 points and Sanders scored 15 points for Russell (22-4).
South Point plays Southeastern at 8:30 p.m. Monday in the sectional tournament at Jackson.
