SOUTH POINT — There might have been a dark cloud hovering over the South Point Pointers after Saturday’s game, but there were several rays of sunlight ripping through the darkness.
The Pointers lost a tough battle to the Cabell Midland Knights 59-52 in double overtime in a game South Point had several chances to win late in the fourth quarter as well as in overtime.
“We had a lot of positives. We just didn’t capitalize on our opportunities,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“We played a lot of young kids and they got a chance to play in a pressure situation. You hate to lose, but this was a good experience for our kids.”
South Point (8-1) led 14-9 after the first quarter as Chance Gunther scored nine points including a 3-pointer.
The Knights (14-5) cut the deficit to 29-26 at the half as Ty Sturm scored eight points in the second quarter. Austin Webb had seven points and Marcus Malone hit a 3-pointer for the Pointers.
Midland rallied to take a 40-39 lead after three quarters as they made 8-of-10 free throw. Chandler Schmidt was 4-of-4.
Webb had six points in the quarter for South Point.
The Pointers tied the game in the fourth quarter on four points from Webb, a trey from Nakyan Turner and two clutch foul shots by Gunther.
Edwards had six of Midland’s 10 points.
Neither team scored in the first overtime, but Schmidt scored eight points in the second overtime including 4-o-5 at the line. The Pointers only managed two free throws by Gunther.
Midland converted 21-of-31 free throws while the Pointers were 7-of-11.
Webb had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Pointers. Gunther scored 17 points with Malone grabbing eight rebounds.
Edwards and Schmidt had 16 points each and Sturm 14 to lead Midland.
