PORTSMOUTH — The Fairland Dragons are just plain selfish.
The Dragons not only won their fourth straight Ohio Valley Conference championship this season, but they refused to share it as the won the title outright with a 60-35 win over the Portsmouth Trojans on Tuesday.
Expected to finish in the middle of the pack this season after losing their top six players, the Dragons not only won the league but now have a two-game lead with just one conference game to play.
Fairland (17-4, 12-) was led by Matt Mondlak and Aiden Porter with 13 points each while Jacob Polcyn had 10 points and nine rebounds. Porter had eight assists and Clayton Thomas dished out six assists.
Danny Lattimore scored 18 points and Matt Fraulini had nine points and five rebounds for Portsmouth (6-15, 2-11).
Portsmouth led early 3-0, 6-4 and 8-6 on 3-pointers by Fraulini and Lattimore and a basket by Miles Shipp at the 3:19 mark of the first quarter.
Ian Chinn tied the game at 8 and Mondlak hit a 3-poitner with one second on the clock for an 11-8 lead.
The Dragons outscored the Trojans 8-2 at the start of the second quarter.
Lattimore’s basket had the Trojans down 19-14 but the Dragons scored seven unanswered points to lead 26-14.
Thomas sank two foul shots with no time on the clock and Fairland led 29-16 at the half.
Fairland went on a 10-4 run and it was 39-20 midway through the third quarter. Gavin Hunt’s basket just before the end of the quarter opened up a 49-26 lead.
On Friday, Fairland hosts Rock Hill and Portsmouth visits Ironton.
