The mother of a 2-year-old, who died after ingesting an illegal drug, and the person who allegedly supplied the drug were arrested Thursday afternoon by the Ironton Police Department.

Casey Boggess, 28, of Ironton, was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering children, a felony of the third degree. She is the mother a 2-year-old boy who died on Jan. 27. An autopsy later showed the child had drugs in his system.

The two charges are for the child, who died, and another child that was in the apartment when the drugs were present.

Jonathon Rice, 34, of Ironton, was charged with corrupting another with drugs, a felony of the second degree.

“He is the one that allegedly brought the illicit drugs to the apartment,” said Ironton detective Captain Joe Ross.

He said both people were booked into the Lawrence County Jail.

Ross said the toxicology report indicated that there were illicit drugs in the child’s system, but wouldn’t specify what type of drug it was.

The boy’s father, David E. Large, 36, of Ironton, was arrested earlier this month and charged with endangering children.

Ross said that they have been investigating this case “every day. I did state, in the past, that there would be more arrests. And I am not saying that these are the last two arrests we may make out of this. We may make more in the future, depending how our investigation goes from this point on.”

Ross did say that from the initial investigation that the child ingesting the drug was an accident.

“I would like to add, we see this on a daily basis. And I hope that this is an eye-opener for parents who have illicit drugs around their children,” he said. “This is an example of what can happen. Everybody kind of turns their head and says it will never happen to their child. But as you see in this case, it did happen to this child. Maybe, this will open some eyes of parents. But I will say, if you value your illicit drugs more than you value your children, there is a very steep penalty. And that is what these people are facing.”
