Lady Pointers suffer tough loss in district semifinals

WAVERLY — When traveling the tournament trail, teams run into a lot of crazy rides.
The South Point Lady Pointers found themselves on a wild ride Saturday in the Division III district semifinals Saturday at Waverly’s downtown arena.
Falling behind by 10 points early, the Lady Pointers got back into the game only to come up short in the fourth quarter as they fell to the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors 51-42.
South Point (17-7) was led by Emilee Whitt with 17 points, Emilee Carey with 10 and Diamond Crawley added nine.
Alexa Pennington scored 16 points and Allison Mallott 14 for Eastern (24-2).
Pennington hit a 3-pointer and scored seven points while Mallott had four points and Camryn Pickerill hit a 3-pointer as Eastern took an 18-8 first quarter lead.
Carey hit a trey for the Lady Pointers in the quarter.
But things quickly changed in the second quarter as South Point outscored Eastern 11-4 to get within22-19 at the break.
Whitt drained a triple and two foul shots to spark the comeback.
Each team scored 13 points in the third quarter and it was 35-32.
Whitt knocked down two more 3-pointers while Carey and Crawley also hit trifectas.
Pennington had five points including a 3-pointer while Mackenzie Gloff and Malott had four points each.
In the fourth quarter, Malott scored six points, Juanita Frost hit a 3-pointer, Morgan Reynolds went 3-of-5 at the line and Pennington had four points as she hit 2-of-2 from the line.
Whitt, Crawley and Kate Mundy — who had five points in the quarter — all hit 3-pointers for South Point.
The Lady Pointers hit nine 3-pointers for the game but they only made 4-of-6 at the line.
