John P. Goodwin

Dec. 21, 1948 – March 13, 2019

John P. Goodwin, 70, of Manchester, passed away March 13, 2019. The Coal Grove native was born Dec. 21, 1948, to the late Charles Brooks and Florence Pearson Hatfield Goodwin.

He was preceded in death by a son, John K. Goodwin; four brothers, Arnold Hatfield, James Hatfield, Richard Hatfield and David Goodwin; and a sister, Pauline Hatfield Clay. Survivors include two sons, Larry (Deanna) Goodwin, Robbie Lee Leibee; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Pam (Jeff Hitchcock) and Sharon Fields; 15 nieces and nephews; good friend, Barbara Michael; and dog, Sammy.

John was a graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1968. After advanced training as an infantryman, he was deployed as a 60 mm mortarman with Company G, 2nd battalion, 9th Marine Regiment. In a major battle with the North Vietnamese Army on June 1, 1969, John was severely wounded by an enemy grenade as he tried to defend his position and protect several wounded Marines.

For his heroic effort, he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor. Over the decades, John remained close to, and was held in high regard by, his fellow Marines. He was respected for his thoughtfulness, wisdom and keen sense of humor. He wrote profoundly and poetically about combat and the scars of war.

After a prolonged hospitalization, John was honorably discharged. He started working at Armco Steel in 1970 and retired in 1990.

John will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He will be cremated per his wishes. Crockett L. Reed Funeral Home is handling arrangements and there will be no services. There will be a private celebration of his life.

Leo Francis Keating

Jan. 13, 1964 – March 17, 2019

Leo Francis Keating, 55, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019, at his residence. The Lawrence County native was born Jan. 13, 1964, the son of the late John Keating and Loanna Lykins Keating of Ironton.

Leo attended Rock Hill Schools. He was a former mechanic for Johnny Auto Repair and a heavy machine operator at Cooksey’s landfill in Boyd County, Kentucky. Leo was of the Baptist faith. He lived in Lawrence County all his life.

In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Freda Miller.

In addition to his mother he is also survived by two daughters, Melissa Keating and Terri Keating both of Ironton; four sisters, Kathy Case, Joann Friend, Judy Williams and Julie Anna Dyer all of Ironton; two brothers, Johnny Ray Keating and Jason Lee Keating both of Ironton; and three grandsons, Billy Kellogg, Kyle Scott, and Damian Huff.

Edward Roberts

Feb. 9, 1929 — March 19, 2019

Edward Lambert Roberts, 90, of Ironton, died at Community Hospice of Ashland on Tuesday, March 19, 2019.

He was born Feb. 9, 1929, to the late Herman Albert Happy and Josephine Lambert Roberts. He was the widower of Madalyn Roberts.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eloise Bland and Rosemary Littler; and brother, Robert Roberts.

He was retired from Armco Steel. He was a U.S. Marine, a lifelong member of the VFW Post 8850, also a member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge 177. He was a member of Central Christian Church.

Survivors include his children, Connie (Rock) Keaton, Rose Lewis, Joanne Roberts, Charlie (Laurie) Roberts and Tommy (Jonna) Roberts; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and sister, Linda Barnes.

Visitation will be 11-11:45 a.m. Thursday at O’Keefe-Baker Funeral Home, with a graveside service following at Woodland Cemetery with Eric Barns officiating. Post 8850 will perform military rites.

 

Janice Unrue-Crum

Janice “Jenny” Sue Unrue-Crum, 68, of South Point, died Sunday, March 17, 2019, at UK Healthcare, Lexington, Kentucky.

Pauline Aldridge

Dec. 28, 1941 – March 18, 2019

Pauline Aldridge, 77, of Ironton, passed away Monday, March 18, 2019, at a local health care facility.

The Ironton native was born Dec. 28, 1941, the daughter of the late Paul and Lola Shope Walizer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Aldridge, who passed away June 21, 2004.

Pauline attended Ironton High School and was a homemaker. She is of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Russell; a son, Lawrence Aldridge; and three brothers, Perry Walizer, Jimbo Walizer and Tom Shope.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Aldridge, of Ironton, and Ronald Aldridge, of Waverly; six grandchildren, Angel Bordelon, Staci Bordelon, Kayla Aldridge, Jerry Stapleton, Michael Aldridge, all of Ironton, and Amy Aldridge, of Columbus; two brothers, Gary Burchfield and Jack Walizer, both of Ironton; and two sisters, Rose Thompson and Betty Howell, both of Ironton.
