AID — The St. Joseph Flyers cut to the Chase.
Chase Wilds, that is.
Wilds threw three scoreless innings as the Flyers opened the season with a 14-2 five-inning win over the Symmes Valley Vikings on Tuesday.
Wilds struck out five and walked four while allowing just two hits.
Jimmy Mahlmeister finished up and allowed two hits and no earned runs.
The Flyers had seven hits with Jackson Rowe going 2-5 with two runs batted in. Matt Sheridan, Isaac Whaley and Wilds all drove in two runs.
Four Vikings’ pitchers combined to walk 11 batters.
“Chase Wilds threw pretty well for the first time out. Offensively, we just clawed to get some runs,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
“I know we’re pretty young, but Symmes Valley is really young.”
After a scoreless first inning, the Flyers scored seven runs in the second.
Jimmy Mahlmeister singled, Mike Mahlmeister was safe on an error and Iszak Unger walked. Rowe was safe on an error, Sheridan walked, Whaley hit into a fielder’s choice to score a run, Wilds was safe on an error, Ryan Payne singled, Jimmy Mahlmeister walked and Mike Mahlmeister singled.
Three more runs scored in the third to make it 10-0.
Unger walked, Rowe was safe on an error and Sheridan had a two-run single. Whaley walked and Wilds had an RBI single.
The Vikings got their two runs in the fourth.
A walk, a single by Riley Robinson, an error, a single by Ethan Patterson and another error.
St. Joseph scored four in the fifth to end the game early.
Ryan Payne, Justin Mahlmeister and Jacob Salisbury walked and Ethan Clark was hit by a pitch.
Jackson Rowe singled home a run and then Isaac Whaley walked and Wilds was hit by a pitch.
The Flyers visit South Point on Wednesday.
