A walk is scheduled for April 4 to raise awareness for efforts to prevent suicide.

County Commisioner DeAnna Holliday said the event will take place at 3:30 p.m. that day, starting at River Hills Community Center, located at 628 S. Ninth St., and proceeding to the Lawrence County Courthouse.

Holliday said the event is being organized by Impact Prevention and will be partly in memory of Lawrence County Commission President Bill Pratt, who died in December 2018.

“We’re expecting a big crowd for this,” she said of interest.

Commission President Freddie Hayes Jr. announced the walk at last week’s meeting of commission. Hayes said, given the circumstances of last year, the walk was important to him personally and encouraged the public to attend.

“We’re trying to get awareness out there,” he said of depression. “It’s a sickness. If anyone wants to get involved, I’m very passionate about that.”

Impact Prevention is a nonprofit prevention agency which is certified through Ohio Mental Health and Addiction Services (OHMHAS). The group launched in 2015 and is focused on evidence-based prevention strategies for youth in the community.
