Blackwell pitches Pointers past Flyers for his 2nd win
SOUTH POINT — Brody Blackwell is now 2-for-2.
Not at the plate but on the mound.
Blackwell got his second win in as many outings this season as he pitched six innings of two-hit baseball to help the South Point Pointers beat the St. Joseph Flyers 8-1 on Wednesday.
Blackwell struck out nine and walked two.
“Brody Blackwell pitched well tonight to get the win,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
“Brycen McCann did a great job relief getting the last three outs. We are young and working hard every day to get better in all facets of the game.”
Drew Smith, Brycen McCann and Blackwell all went 2-for-3 at the plate as the Pointers (2-0) had seven hits.
The Pointers manufactured a run in the first inning when Smith singled, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.
The lead went to 3-0 in the third inning on a walk to Justin Collins, Smith’s RBI triple and a double steal.
The Pointers put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth.
Zach Cline was hit by a pitch, Smith walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. McCann then singled home both runners.
McCann stole second and scored on a hit by Blackwell.
The Flyers avoided a shutout with a run in the seventh.
Isaac Whaley was hit by a pitch, Chase Wilds singled, a balk moved the runners up and Jimmy Mahlmeister hit a sacrifice fly.
Whaley was 1-2 and Wilds 1-3 to account for the Flyers’ hits.
