You might say the St. Joseph Flyers “Mahl-ed” the Sciotoville East Tartans.
Cousins Jimmy Mahlmeister and Michael Mahlmeister combined for four hits and five runs batted in as the Flyers beat East 15-4 in five innings on Thursday.
Jimmy Mahlmeister was 2-4 with a double and two RBI and Michael Mahlmeister was 2-4 and three RBI.
The Flyers (2-1) had 12 hits with Isaac Whaley enjoying a big game as he went 2-3 with a triple and three RBI.
“We hit the ball pretty well. Our young kids are starting to get a little more comfortable and they’re starting to get a little confidence. It’s a process,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
East used three walks, a double by Winston and a single by Paishon to score two in the top of the first, but the Flyers exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning.
Jackson Rowe and Matt Sheridan reached on errors for a run and Whaley drilled an RBI triple. Chase Wilds had an RBI double, Ryan Payne walked and Jimmy Mahlmeister double in a pair of runs.
Mike Mahlmeister singled home his cousin, Max Weber was hit by pitch, Sheridan reached on error and Whaley and Wilds had RBI singles.
The Flyers added a run in the third when Jimmy Mahlmeister singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Max Weber.
St. Joseph added four runs in the third inning to lead 15-3.
Jimmy Mahlmeister walked, Mike Mahlmeister singled and Izsak Unger was safe on an error.
Sheridan went the first three innings for the win. He struck out five, walked three and gave up four hits.
