ASHLAND, Ky. — Sun’s out. Guns out.
The young pitching arms of the St. Joseph Flyers enjoyed a good week, especially Michael Mahlmeister who threw six innings of two-hit baseball in a 9-0 win over the Rose Hill Royals on Friday.
Mahlmeister struck out 10 and walked two in getting the win. Elijah Rowe pitched a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout.
“Michael Mahlmeister threw great. We’ve got some great innings out of our young pitchers this week. Michael, Matt Sheridan, Jimmy Mahlmeister and Elijah Rowe all threw well,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
Both Rose Hill hits were singles in the sixth inning.
The Flyers (3-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Jackson Rowe singled, Isaac Whaley reached on an error and Ryan Payne drove them home with a double.
A run scored in the second when Izsak Unger reached on a fielder’s choice, Rowe walked and Matt Sheridan singled.
Another run scored in the third when Chase Wilds singled, went to third on an error and scored when Jimmy Mahlmeister’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed.
The Flyers put the game away with five runs in the fourth.
Unger walked, stole second and scored when Sheridan reached on an error. Whaley, Wilds and Payne all walked to force in a run and Jimmy Mahlmeister singled to drive home a pair.
Mahlmeister and Payne pulled off a double steal as the final run scored.
