There’s an old adage that a walk is as good as a hit.
St. Joseph was outhit 11-4 by the Chesapeake Panthers, but nine walks were mixed in with the Flyers’ offense as they posted an 11-3 win on Tuesday.
Isaac Whaley went the distance for the Flyers to get the win. He struck out eight and — more importantly — walked just one.
“Whaley threw a good game. He was hitting his spots well,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant. “We played decent defense and took advantage of Chesapeake’s walks.”
The Flyers (6-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Jackson Rowe walked, stole second and scored on Whaley’s hit. Whaley went to second on the throw home, stole third and scored on Chase Wilds’ ground out.
St. Joseph got a run in the fourth when Jimmy Mahlmeister walked, moved up on a ground out and scored as Max Weber reached on an error.
Chesapeake (0-6) got two runs back in the top of the fifth when Levi Best walked, Thomas Sentz singled and Austin Browning tripled.
But the Flyers erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the inning.
Matt Sheridan singled and Ryan Payne, Jimmy Mahlmeister and Michael Mahlmeister all walked. Weber was safe on an error as two runs scored and both Izsak Unger and Rowe walked to force in two more runs.
Sheridan then got his second hit of the inning and drove in a run. Whaley grounded out to drive in the final run.
St. Joseph got a run in the sixth when Payne was hit by a pitch and Jimmy Mahlmeister doubled.
The Panthers scored their final run in the seventh on a double by Trent Dearth, Sentz’s base hit and an error on Browning’s ground ball.
Sheridan went 2-4 for the Flyers.
Sentz was 4-4, Travis Grimm 2-4 and Dearth 2-4 with a double for the Panthers.
