AID — Now that’s a really long extra inning game.
The Symmes Valley Vikings and Sciotoville East Tartans were tied 9-9 after seven innings on Friday when darkness forced the game to be halted.
The teams were unable to resume play until Tuesday but the wait proved to be worth it to the Vikings who posted an 11-10 Southern Ohio Conference win in 10 innings.
The Vikings actually fell behind 10-9 in the eighth inning only to tie the game in the bottom of the inning before pushing across the winning run in the 10th.
“I was proud of them. They fought hard for young kids. They got behind but they would just grind it out,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.
“Tanner (McComas) came in and did a nice job. (Logan) Brace pitched over two days and did all you can ask of him.”
The Vikings got the winning run when Logan Justice reached on an error, stole second and third, and came home on a throwing error that hit him in the back as he raced for the plate.
East got a run in the top of the second but the Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Justice singled, stole second and scored as Nick Strow reached on an error.
Symmes Valley took a 2-1 lead in the third.
Levi Niece walked, stole second and McComas had an RBI single.
In the fourth, East got three runs to lead 4-2 but the Vikings scored twice to tie the game.
Strow and Caden Brammer walked, they pulled off a double steal, Ethan Patterson had a sacrifice fly and Niece singled in Brammer.
The Vikings pushed across five run in the fifth to lead 9-4.
Griffin Hill and Logan Brace walked, Justice had a sacrifice bunt, and Strow had a two-run single. Brammer and Niece walked and Devin Renfroe had a two-run single. McComas capped the rally with an RBI single.
East got three runs in the sixth and then tied the game with two runs in the seventh.
The Tartans took the lead with a run in the top of the eighth but the Vikings rallied as Hill walked, pinch-runner Dillon Reed stole second and scored on Brace’s clutch RBI single.
McComas worked 1.2 innings for the win and went 2-5 at the plate.
The Vikings had 10 hits with Niece going 3-3 with a double and Brace 2-3.
