They say pitching is the name of the game. If that’s the case, pitching took the names Isaak Whaley and Chase Wilds on Saturday.
Whaley threw a five-inning one-hitter in the first game as the St. Joseph Flyers won 14-1 over the Tug Valley Panthers.
In the second game, Chase Wilds came on in relief of injured starter Jackson Rowe and work 4.2 innings of three-hit shutout baseball and the Flyers used a seventh inning squeeze bunt for a 5-4 win.
“Isaac dominated game one. He pitched a great game and we hit the ball really well,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
“Chase Wilds came in after Jackson (Rowe) got hurt and threw a tremendous game pounding the strike zone until we clawed back in it.”
Whaley struck out seven and did not walk a batter. The only run was unearned.
Wilds struck out three and did not allow a run or a walk.
In the first game, the Flyers (5-1) took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and added six in the second.
In the first, Jackson Rowe was safe on an error and Matt Sheridan walked and stole second.
Whaley singled in a run and Chase Wilds singled for two more. Ryan Payne singled and Michael Mahlmeister and Max Weber followed with RBI singles.
In the second, Rowe and Sheridan singled to put runners on the corners. Rowe scored on a double steal.
Wilds singled, Payne was safe on an error to load the bases and Jimmy Mahlmeister singled in a run. Michael Mahlmeister walked forcing home Wilds, Weber grounded out as a run scored and Izsak Unger capped the rally with an RBI single.
The Flyers made it 14-0 in the third inning.
Wilds doubled, Payne was hit by a pitcher and Jimmy Mahlmeister was safe on an error as a run scored. Michael Mahlmeister singled in a run and Weber hit into a fielder’s choice as the final run scored.
Tug Valley (1-8) got its only run in the fifth when Dak Vance reached on an error, stole third and scored on a single by Shane Russell.
Wilds was 3-4 with a double and two RBI, Michael Mahlmeister 2-2 with three RBI and Unger 2-3 and an RBI.
In the second game, Jimmy Mahlmeister squeezed home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with no outs after Wilds was hit by a pitch, Payne walked and Wilds went to third on a wild pitch.
The Flyers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Wilds singled and scored when Payne reached on an error. Jimmy Mahlmeister singled and Jacob Salisbury hit into a fielder’s choice as the run scored.
The Panthers got all four of their runs in the third inning.
Deskins walked, C Pack singled, A Vance reached on an error, Ethan Varney hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored, Justin Hall singled for a run and Dak Vance grounded out to drive in a run.
The Flyers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
