Jackson Rowe was looking good and Matt Sheridan had the St. Joseph Flyers feeling good after a 7-2 win over the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans on Thursday.
Rowe pitched a complete game allowing six hits, striking out five and walking three.
Sheridan went 2-4 with two runs batted in as the Flyers improved to 7-1.
“Jackson Rowe threw a complete game and looked as good as he has all year,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.
“The offense throughout the lineup hit and we maximized our chances. Matt Sheridan played great defense and stayed hot at the plate.”
The game was scoreless until the fourth.
The Flyers’ Ryan Payne walked, stole second and third, and scored on a hit by Jimmy Mahlmeister.
Notre Dame got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Caleb Nichols singled, moved up on an error and scored on a squeeze bunt by Jake Cole.
But the Flyers pushed four runs across in the fifth to lead 5-1.
Max Weber singled, Izsak Unger put down a sacrifice bunt, and Rowe singled pinch-runner Ethan Clark to third and took second on the throw. Sheridan then delivered a two-run single.
Isaac Whaley doubled home Sheridan and Chase Wilds singled home the final run.
St. Joseph added two insurance runs in the seventh.
Sheridan singled, stole second, took third on a ground out by Whaley and scored on Wilds’ sacrifice fly.
Wilds was safe when the ball was dropped and he scored on a double by Payne.
The Titans got a run in the bottom of the inning on singles by Chris Schmidt and Matt Boldman and Roy Rigsby’s ground out.
