Ironton uses complete game to down Hornets

Maybe Gage Salyers didn’t need to throw a complete game because the Ironton Fighting Tigers played a complete game.
Ironton banged out 10 hits, had one error and got good pitching to beat the Coal Grove Hornets 10-1 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Salyers combined with Kyle Howell and Ashton Duncan to limit Coal Grove to only two hits.
Salyers worked four innings giving up one hit, one earned run with five strike outs and four walks. Howell went two innings giving up one hit and striking out three while finished up the seventh and had a strikeout.
Brycen Thomas was 2-3 with a double and a run batted in, Salyers 2-4, Cameron Deere 2-4 with an RBI, Jacob Sloan 2-3 and an RBI, Gunner Crawford 1-2 and an RBI, and Collin Freeman 1-4 with two RBI.
Coal Grove (3-3, 1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on walks to Evan Gannon, Colton Sparks and Cory Borders and a ground out by Schyler Shope.
Ironton (5-4, 2-1) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Ryan Ashley was hit by a pitch and Deere and Crawford both singled for a run. Deere scored on a wild pitch and Crawford came home when Beau Brownstead grounded out.
The Fighting Tigers added a run in the fourth.
Thomas doubled and went to third on an outfield error. An out later, Howell grounded out as Thomas scored.
Ironton scored two runs in the fourth with two outs.
Sloan singled, Thomas walked, Sloan stole third and Collin Freeman had a two-run single.
Ironton put the game away with four runs in the fifth.
Salyers singled and stole second and third. Ashley walked and stole second. Salyers then scored on a passed ball. Deere followed with an RBI single.
Two outs later, Sloan singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Thomas.
Coal Grove’s Brady Doyle was 1-3 and Ben Compliment 1-3 with a double.
