Dan Palmer, the executive director of the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District, expects to be busy during tire amnesty day in Ironton on Saturday.

Lawrence County residents with ID can dispose of tires at no cost.

At the Scioto County tire amnesty day held last Saturday at Spartan Stadium, the solid waste district took in 1,162 tires from 121 vehicles.

Palmer is expecting more than that from Lawrence County.

He said on Friday he had already gotten calls from people who had tires and that the South Point clean up day ends at noon so people can bring the tires to the amnesty day.

“We’re expecting a pretty good crowd,” he said.

There will be three trailers set up at the Ironton Hills Plaza from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. and there will be workers from the STAR Community Justice Center to help put tires on the trailers. The tires will be taken to Dalton Tires to be properly recycled.

Palmer said that tires are “never ending project in this county. And there is no cause for it.”

The district continues to deal with illegal tire dumping, with over 7,000 tires removed from several locations in four months.

“We offer enough programs throughout the year, so why is there illegal dumping,” he asked. “It’s uncalled for. My personal opinion is that if we catch illegal dumpers, they go to court. We’re tired of it.”

They will be accepting up to 10 tires per vehicle.

Palmer advised people to try and get there early, as the event is usually non-stop.

Other upcoming solid waste district events include a drug take back day next Saturday at the Ironton Hills Plaza and an electronic waste and document shred day on May 11.

“People will have the opportunity to properly dispose of their electronics, such as cell phones, computers, key boards, copy machines, etc.,” Palmer said. “We’ll also be shredding any sensitive documents that people may have and want to get rid of.”
