SOUTH POINT — The St. Joseph Lady Flyers gave up nine runs. Well, they actually gave up one run and gave away another eight.
The Lady Flyers committed eight errors that led to eight unearned runs in a 9-4 loss to the South Point Lady Pointers on Tuesday.
The Lady Flyers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Kaitlyn Sheridan singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a hit by Alex Holtzapfel.
But South Point got four runs in the bottom of the inning after there were two outs.
Kylee Ellison and Jill Alysworth walked and Sara Allen reached on an error as the runners scored.
Emily Byrd was safe on an error to score Allen and Destinee Newton capped the rally with a two-run single.
The Lady Pointers went up 6-1 in the second.
Ellison singled and took second on an error. Alysworth doubled in the runner, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out by Byrd.
St. Joseph got a run back in the fourth when Paige Preston singled, Lydia Sheridan walked, Isabella Griffiths was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Emma Whaley walked to force home the run.
The Lady Flyers cut the deficit to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
Kaitlyn Sheridan and Kelsey Malone walked and moved up on a wild pitch. A pair of wild pitches scored both runners.
South Point got three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Ellison was safe on a dropped fly ball. Alysworth also reached on an error as the run scored. Allen followed with an RBI triple and then scored when Byrd grounded out.
Byrd got the win as she gave up six hits, one earned run with five strikeouts in four innings. Holtzapfel took the loss as she struck out four, walked three and gave up seven hits.
Preston went 3-4 and Holtzapfel 2-2 to pace the Lady Flyers.
Seven different players had hits for South Point.
On Wednesday, the Lady Flyers host Tolsia in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
