Murphy, Crum spark Lady Hornets’ OVC win
COAL GROVE — One old and one new got together for a good one.
Freshman Kaleigh Murphy pitched a one-hitter, senior Lauren Crum drove in five runs and the Coal Grove hit two home runs as the Lady Hornets beat the Fairland Lady Dragons 12-1 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Wednesday.
Jaiden Griffith and Rylee Harmon hit home runs and Addi Dillow and Murphy each went 3-4 with a double as Coal Grove got 11 hits. Crum had a double to go with a sacrifice fly and two RBI ground outs.
Coal Grove took a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Dillow and Murphy singled and Crum doubled them home. Harmon and Destiny Napier walked, Maddie Malone was hit by a pitch to force in a run and Griffith grounded out as a run scored.
The lead went to 6-0 in the second.
Dillow singled, stole second, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Murphy’s base hit. Murphy stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored when Crum grounded out.
Griffith belted a solo home run in the third and the Lady Hornets added a run in the fourth to lead 8-0.
Murphy walked, moved to third on a pair of passed balls and scored on Crum’s ground out.
Fairland avoided the shutout with a run in the fifth when Chloe Cremeans walked, stole second, took third on a throwing error and scored on a hit by Olivia Burge.
But in the bottom of the fifth, Coal Grove scored four more runs.
Erica Carpenter singled, went to second on an error and took third on Dillow’s hit. Murphy doubled in a run and Crum hit a sacrifice fly.
Harmon capped the rally and ended the game early as she clubbed a two-run homer.
