On Saturday, officials of the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District hosted their annual drug take back event.

Each spring, the agency sets up a drop off point in Ironton in which county residents can bring their unused medications for disposal.

In addition to a site at The Hills shopping plaza in town, officials and police set up stations in South Point and Chesapeake and collections taken up there were brought to the Ironton disposal.

The total for the Ironton location was 78 pounds of pills, 30 pounds of sharps and syringes and 48 pounds of liquid medication collected from 34 cars.

The day prior, the agency had a similar event in Scioto County and took in 30 pounds of pills, 50 pounds of sharps and syringes and 40 pounds of liquid medication from 28 vehicles.

Partnering with the sheriff’s office, the agency has made sure that these medications do not fall into the hands of children, are not traded illicitly and are not disposed of in a manner that may be harmful to the environment.

We congratulate them on the large collection over the weekend and encourage county residents to use this option in the future.
